It’s a bombshell in Swedish esports.
Ninjas in Pyjamas is Sweden’s most iconic esports team. Now, however, the team’s last Swedish connection is disappearing. On Thursday, NIP issued redundancy notices to all employees in Sweden at its Stockholm office.
According to sources speaking to Expressen, the Swedish operations will be managed from Abu Dhabi, where NIP already has its global headquarters.
At management level, the news had been anticipated for some time, but for other employees the announcement came as more of a surprise.
Expressen has previously reported on NIP’s massive investment in Bitcoin, and according to sources, that venture is taking up an increasing amount of resources and playing a larger role in the company.
Five-year deal with the state
Over the past two years, Ninjas in Pyjamas has therefore been gradually moving more and more of its operations to Abu Dhabi. This is part of a five-year agreement with the Emirati government, under which NIP receives large sums of money to conduct its business in the country.
The deal is worth up to 440 million Swedish kronor (~$40 million USD).
According to sources speaking to Expressen, NIP has also previously tried to convince the players on its Counter-Strike roster to relocate to the United Arab Emirates — but that was met with a flat-out no. This is because the opportunities for development in Abu Dhabi are significantly worse than in Europe.
Expressen has reached out to NIP Group CEO Hicham Chahine for comment.
